Good morning and welcome. This is Pastor lucy painter. Last week, we left where the Israelites army had been totally psyched out by gory ith, and none of the soldiers who were willing to fight him except David Hearts boy who had come to the battlefield to see his brothers. And we saw earlier his brother and king Saul wondering what a boy like him thought he could do differently that they had not already tried. But we said that David was so driven by his passion for the honor of God and the reputation of his nation that he offered to fight the Philistines. We ended the episode where after none of them could convince David that he shouldn't go into the battle against someone as experienced and hugest Gloria with Saul said to him, Go and the Lord be with you. So today, happy man. There we are. Going to continue with that story and see what happens.

We're still in first Samuel chapter 17. And we will read uh verse 38 to 58 but we will read it in uh sections. The bible says from verse 38 to 40. Then Saul gave David his own arma abroad helmet and a court of Male David put it on, strap the sword over it and took a step or two to see what it was like for he had never worn such things before. I can't go in this. He protested to soul, I'm not used to them. So David took them off again. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream, put them into his shepherd. Berg, then armed only with his shepherd's staff and a slim, he started across the valley to fight the Philistines. So, in contrast to what we saw last week about David's demeanor. Mhm. This text begins with an image of a man who seems to have forgotten their history with God.

When you read about Saul's frantic attempts to bribe people into war and to clothe David with his armor to protect him from the spear or sort of Guliev, you would think he knew nothing about God. We see a man who is so much in the flesh, a man who is so much in the natural, a lot of commonality among, focused on the outward that he can't even understand what is motivating David into barrel. This was the king who was supposed to inspire his army, but all his soul was what could go wrong in that battle. And so he dressed up David with his armor, the best Arma in the kingdom. But David tells him, no, I cannot work with, I cannot walk in this. I have not even tested them. This isn't going to work not only because the Obama couldn't fit David physically.

I'm thinking considering Soul's height and David's height, they were already too big for him, but also because David knew that the Obama wasn't going to win that war. He knew it wasn't his wisdom and better protection that had saved him from the poor of the bear and the lion. He knew he had one against larger components than himself without this kind of weapons. Whatever soul was proposing that he goes into battle with was something very new to him. Something he had not tried before and David refused to use it. He had seen God taylor his victory before and he believed that he could trust him to do it again. This Arma had of course protected soul. We cannot dispute that because he had gone to battle and it had kept him alive. But David decided that this wasn't his way and I don't know if this resonates with you, but I have seen people fall into this trap so many times.

God does something wonderful for someone and we lose our minds trying to copy that we are so busy trying to be what someone else was when they succeeded. So busy trying to be what we think we should be, that we don't embrace what God has called us to be, what he created us to be. But the word of God says that David took the camera off. He wasn't going into that battle with another month's armor. He was going to put his trust in the God who had believed him before, who had delivered him before. He was going to put his trust in the God whose army was being despised by the Philistines because that was his battle. David knew he was a vessel in God's head. He knew God will not be defeated. You know, David would have been justified to put on the armor. Even if he was still going to use the stones, this would have been, you know, extra protection.

And besides, his opponent was also using an even better armor. I mean, it makes sense, right? But there is a reason why the bible calls David a man after God's heart. He did not take middle ground when it came to doing God's work for him. It was either God's way or God's way. He wasn't going into that battle. In if he wasn't gonna go into that battle in God's Arma, then na in absolute trust and dependence on God. He had to do it God's way. And you know, sometimes we want to go into the battle in a safe middle ground. We want to try both the armor of the flesh and the armor of God. We want to look nice to both believers and unbelievers. We want a little bit of both sides. But I pray that would be willing to make the kind of choice David made that we should trust in God and in him alone, shalom, we are going to pause there for today and we continue tomorrow and see what did David do after choosing God's Arma.
